Formation Of Guarded Sodium In Lime Mud, 2004 International Chemical Recovery Conference

Guarded sodium accounts for about one third of the total sodium in lime mud. Results of laboratory studies show that guarded sodium always exists in the lime mud, and is formed as a result of the co-precipitation of Na2CO3 and CaCO3 during the causticizing process. The guarded sodium content in lime mud varies between 0.3 and 0.5 wt% Na, and is not affected by liquor temperature, lime-to-liquor ratio and sulphidity. Since it is protected by the CaCO3 structure, guarded sodium is insoluble in water at room temperature, and hence cannot be removed by washing. However, as lime mud is heated in the lime kiln, guarded sodium is released as Na2CO3 and becomes water-soluble. The release process begins at about 300oC, and is complete at about 600oC.
