My TAPPI Story: Naomi Gehling
Understanding the interaction between sootblower jets and superheater tubes is an important step in the effort to improve sootblowing strategies. A numerical model has been developed to study the characteristics of a sootblower jet as it sweeps through a tube bank and interacts with the tubes and deposits. The applicability of the model in predicting supersonic free jet flows and a jet propagating between platens has been demonstrated by its close agreement with experimental measurements. The results of the numerical simulations and laboratory experiments suggest that the interaction of the supersonic portions of the jet with the tubes will result in a reduced effectiveness for deposits removal. This reduction will become more pronounced once the potential core of the jet hits the tube bank. No significant reduction was observed when only the subsonic portion of the jet hit the tube bank.
