Modeling Swelling Of Black Liquor Droplet During Pyrolysis, 2004 International Chemical Recovery Conference
In this study, a mathematical model is derived that describes the swelling phenomenon of the droplet
during pyrolysis. The model is based on heat and mass transfer, including reactions, inside the porous
spherical droplet. All gases that are produced cannot be transported through the droplet at the same
rate and some are, therefore, trapped inside. This entrapped gas forms bubbles that expand with
increasing production, due to the pressure. The expanding bubbles then cause the entire droplet to
swell.
The model is then verified with the experimental data. Experiments to determine the swelling are
performed in a specially built thermo gravimetric analysis equipment for single black liquor droplet
gasification.
