Non-Colled Smelt Spouts- Recent Field Experiences with Improved Alloy, 1998 International Chemical Recovery Conference Proceedings
Following more than 10 years of material testing, component design improvements, including prototype operational testing, a commercial non-cooled smelt spout suitable for use on a kraft or soda recovery boiler has been developed by ABB. At the time of writing this paper, and prior to full product commercialization, a total of twenty-seven (27) non-cooled smelt spouts have been installed in nine (9) recovery boilers for seven (7) different customers. These installations include the early prototype testing locations, up to and including, the latest installations. At the time of writing this paper, ten (10) non-cooled smelt spouts were in operation. Table 1 summarizes the field experiences of these smelt spouts to date. This paper will briefly review some of the R&D developments, however, the discussion will primarily focus on present day operational experiences and key details that may not be commonly known about the non-cooled smelt spouts. The specific benefits, directly related to these spouts, are highlighted and summarized.
