Dynamic Study of Carryover Deposition in Kraft Recovery Boilers Using an Entrained Flow Reactor, 1998 International Chemical Recovery Conference Proceedings

An Entrained Flow Reactor (EFR) was built to simulate conditions experienced by carryover particles in the upper section of a recovery boiler and to obtain controlled samples of carryover deposit and collect fundamental data on deposition and removal processes under controlled conditions. In this study, the dynamic deposition of synthetic carryover particles on a temperature-controlled tube surface was investigated as a function of particle size, velocity and chloride concentration. The results show that for particles between 40 and 590 pm, significant deposition occurs only when the chloride content exceeds a critical level, between 2.5 and 5 mole% Cl/(Na+K). Above this level, the deposition rate increases as the chloride content increases, up to about 10 mole% Cl/(Na+K) and then levels off for higher chloride concentration. The deposition rate also increases with an increase in particle size.
