My TAPPI Story: McKenna Goulette
The first commercial black liquor gasification plant in North America, started up in December 1996 at Weyerhaeuser’s pulp mill in New Bern, NC. Since the startup of the a new fiberline at the facility in September of 1997, the CHEMREC TM gasifier has been instrumental in satisfying the mill’s incremental production requirements. This paper will review the plant design and present the operating experience since startup. As a new technology, the gasifier has presented many technical challenges. The supplier and mill team have worked together to overcome several of these and plans are in place to address the rest.
