Influence of Pressure On Swelling, Char Morphology and Char Yields During Black Liquor Pyrolysis, 1998 International Chemical Recovery Conference Proceedings

Two industrial black liquors were pyrolyzed under pressurized conditions (l-20 bar) in two laboratory-scale devices, a pressurized single-particle reactor and a pressurized grid heater, to study how pressure influences liquor swelling and char yields. Swelling was found to decrease as a function of pressure, with a more pronounced decrease observed at lower pressures. An expression is presented to predict the degree of swelling at high pressure when the specific swollen volume at atmospheric pressure is known. Chars formed at high pressure had a lower internal surface area than those formed at atmospheric pressure. A shift in devolatilization behavior was observed at 800°C. At temperatures below 800°C little variation in char yield was observed at different pressures. At higher temperatures char yield increased with pressure due to slower decomposition of sodium carbonate. This efflect becomes more apparent at longer holding times.
