New Approach to Handling ECF Bleach Plant Effluent, 1998 International Chemical Recovery Conference Proceedings

Bleach plant effluent volume can be reduced by its concentration in special evaporators and stripping of the condensate to permit its reuse. However it remains necessary to incinerate the evaporator concentrate. This is comparatively simple if TCF bleaching is used, but this imposes cost and quality penalties. Concentrated ECF effluent can be added to the black liquor circuit, but with the penalties of reduced capacity and contamination by non-process elements.

Alternatively the effluent can be incinerated in a fluidized bed of ferric oxide operating under conditions which volatalize the sodium chloride. Various configurations are possible, but an economic analysis indicates that fueling the incinerator with fuel oil and generating by-product process steam is probably the most cost effective.
