The presence of ammonia (NH,) in vent stack gases of the smelt dissolving tank and also elsewhere in the causticizing plant has been reported earlier in a few contexts /l, 2/. But, little information has been available on the origin of this ammonia /2/. According to our previous studies, black liquor char contains nitrogen which remains in the inorganic salt residue and will be removed from the boiler along with the smelt if the char is oxidized at “mild” conditions, i.e., at moderate O2 -concentrations and temperatures /3/. Very little or no ammonia, however, has been found in smelt samples /2, 4/. Instead, green liquor leaving the dissolver contains some ammonia, and the ammonia content of green liquor increases along the process, being much higher already after the green liquor clarifier /4/.
