Mill Experience in a PGW Bleach Plant Using High-Consistency and Medium-Consistency Technology, 1991 International Mechanical Pulping Conference Proceedings

Based on a research program a high-consistency bleach plant for PGW was installed. The plant was designed to bleach European spruce to a final brightness of 70 - 78% ISO, depending on the LWC paper quality required. High-consistency peroxide bleaching with a subsequent washing stage and recirculation of residual chemicals for pre-bleaching in a stand-pipe is used. The whole bleach plant is operated in the high and medium-consistency range. A mill research project investigated fibre properties, bleachability, the effect of washing, pre-bleaching and composition of bleaching liquor. A mass balance for Mn, COD and DCM-extractives was made.
