Predicting the Performance of a Chip Refiner: A Constitutive Approach, 1991 International Mechanical Pulping Conference Proceedings
Up till now, the effect of steam flow in a chip refiner on the quality of pulp produced could not be predicted without measuring the plate gap and estimating the amount of stagnant pulp locked in the grooves. A constitutive model of the process has been devised which predicts these parameters. It postulates that only part of the pulp and steam can flow between the bars, and that the rest is accommodated by scouring out a passage
from the packed pulp in the grooves. As the model predicts correctly the performance of operating chip refiners, it could be a promising tool for their operational control.
