The effect of static mechanical compression of softwood chips, perpendicular to the fibre grain, on thermomechanical pulping has been investigated. Scanning electron microscopic examination revealed that fibre separation and delamination of cell wall lamella, particularly in the P-S1 or S1-S2 zones could be induced to the chips prior to refining. The pulping results showed significant savings in refining energy and considerable improvement in paper properties. The advantages of static compression were much more beneficial than those produced by conventional screw-press compression.
