Mover or Mirror of Progress in Bleaching Technology, 2002 International Pulp Bleaching Conference Proceedings
Jurgen D Kramer, Thomas J McDonough-- A historical and technological review of the 17 International Pulp Bleaching Conferences (IPBCs) from 1955 to 2002 confirms that the pre-eminent bleaching conference is indeed international. The intuitive first reaction to the question of whether the IPBCs were .Mover. or .Mirror. of progress in pulp bleaching technology has been confirmed by the analysis and discussion in this paper: the IPBCs clearly have been more often a mirror than a prime mover of bleaching technology.
About half the papers had overseas authors. The .Big Four. countries Canada, USA, Sweden, and Finland dominate, but other countries, such as Brazil, have recently increased their share of papers considerably.
Over the years, papers have moved from general scientific and theoretical topics to presenting more specific bleaching technology subjects in more depth. The introduction of Poster Sessions facilitated that trend. Moving from a three-year cycle to a two-year cycle had no apparent impact on the tendency to be a mirror of technology progress more often than a mover.
