Final Bleaching with Ozonated Water, 2002 International Pulp Bleaching Conference Proceedings

Partially-bleached kraft pulps were treated with ozonated water at laboratory and pilot scale. A quick and significant brightness rise was observed. For ozone consumption as low as 0.05% on pulp, several brightness points could be gained at room temperature and neutral pH. Applying higher temperature (55°C) gave the same bleaching effect, but a slight loss in viscosity was observed. Ozone dissolution was performed in a specially designed column. Concentrations of up to 60 mg/l could be easily produced. This process represents an attractive option for a better control of final brightness and, therefore, for potential savings in bleach chemicals.
