Paper Quality in the Information Age, 1996 International Pulp Bleaching Conference Proceedings
Even though paper sales are at record highs and its growth in the office is currently fueled by electronic media, paper’s long-term survival as a prime communication medium is not a given. The relationship between paper and digital information is to a considerable extent synergystic, but it is evolutionary, and change in that relationship will be constant. In order to maximize the odds of paper usage for any foreseeable period, the industry needs to recognize that the very survival of paper is at stake and will be determined by the value information users assign to paper. Building on the major strength of paper as a user interface of choice, thoroughly understanding customers requirements, and addressing shortcomings-- perceived or real -- constitutes a viable strategy. Development of relevant new grades to specifically enhance user friendliness and provide high value for cost for the non-impact imaging technologies of the near future, and an extreme focus on uniformity in all stages of manufacturing, will enable this strategy and control costs.
