Gas Phase Ozone Bleaching, Part II: Reaction Rates with Barious Kraft/ Oxygen, 1996 International Pulp Bleaching Conference Proceedings

Part I of this series discussed the design and operation of an agitated laboratory bleaching contactor and it’s use to make direct measurements of the rate of consumption of ozone during gaseous bleaching. Part II presents additional data obtained with this laboratory system on 4 different kraft/oxygen pulps including both hardwood and softwood, with kappa numbers from 8.0 to 18.3 at the start of ozonation. Reaction rates of different pulps are compared and the results for continuous contactors are presented in graphical form. Pulps of 15 - 18 kappa number exhibited much higher reaction rates than those at 10 - 11 kappa. An hypothesis is presented to explain this unexpected result in terms of the location and reactivity of lignin on the individual fibers.
