My TAPPI Story: McKenna Goulette
Formation of OH and O2 radicals in alkaline H2O2 solution was investigated by chemiluminescence and ESR spectroscopy. An increase in pH or an addition of Fe2+ and Cu2+ favored the production of radicals. An opposite effect was observed with Mn2+. Despite the positive role of radicals in H2O2 delifnification some of the metal ions must be removed from the pulp. Chelation with a mixture of sodium dithionite and EDTA gave interesting results. H2O2 delignification was inproved by the presence of oxygen which showed that some reactions given by these two chemicals are complementary.
