My TAPPI Story: McKenna Goulette
As currently envisioned, an effluent-free polyoxometalate (POM) kraft pulp bleaching mill will consist of four unit operations: A Anaerobic bleaching, B Pulp washing, C Concentration of wash water and removal of undesired inorganic salts, and D Aerobic POM-catalyzed wet oxidation of dissolved organic materials with simultaneous regeneration of the polyoxometalate to its bleaching-active form. This report describes preliminary studies aimed at elucidating the kinetics and mechanism(s) of delignification reactions pertinent to unit operation A. Data obtained from the POM oxidation of lignin model compounds suggest a new chemical route to delignification of unbleached softwood kraft pulp to low kappa numbers, in which only phenolic lignin substructures are implicated as substrates. Reaction rate data obtained during delignification reveal the influence of physical effects associated with heterogeneity and surface phenomena.
