New apparent kinetic models were incorporated into computer simulators of commercial oxygen delignification systems at medium consistency and high consistency. The simulators were used to develop operating strategies that maximize delignification at a given CED viscosity. Maximum delignification increases with consistency, alkali charge, and reactor top pressure. An increase in these conditions affords a reduction of the operating temperature, resulting in improved selectivity. Even higher selectivities could be achieved adding a proposed short initial stage at high pressure. Maximum delignification would increase with its allowable operating pressure, possibly reaching 70%.
