Magnesium exhibits bi-functional effect on the reaction selectivity between phenolic compound and carbohydrate during oxygen-alkali treatment. However, organic peroxides, secondarily produced by the reaction of phenolic compound with oxygen, can be degraded without seriously degrading carbohydrate by keeping the magnesium-iron ratio at high level.
