An ultracentrifuge is used to compress industrially produced samples of thermomechanical pulp (TMP) and recycled fibre (RCF). A significant repeatable difference in behaviour of the two samples is observed with this new experimental technique. Blends of the pulps are studied and it is found that the TMP dominates the behaviour under compression. A mathematical model is constructed for a fibre network compressing in a gravitational field. By assuming a power law relationship between pressure and solidity the results for pure TMP and RCF are simulated by changing the power law parameters. The pressure and solidity profiles generated in this experiment are similar to those thought to exist for the wet web on modern commercial formers.
