New Technique for Determining Fibre Orientation Distribution Through Paper, 1999 International Paper Physics Conference Proceedings

Li Xu, Ian Parker, Yuri Filonenko

This paper introduces a new technique for determining the fibre orientation distribution in thin layers throughout the thickness of a paper sheet using confocal microscopy and image analysis. Confocal laser scanning microscopy provides a non-destructive method for sectioning paper samples. A series of images are obtained by scanning a sample through its thickness. An image analysis method, based on the Hough transform, has been developed for determining the orientation of fibre segments in each layer. The orientation distribution is presented in polar coordinates. Parameters such as orientation index and orientation angle can be determined from the shape of the distribution pattern. This technique has been applied to 60 gsm laboratory sheets made on a Dynamic Former. The results indicate that this new technique can accurately determine the distribution of fibre orientation in paper.
