In this paper, nonlinear finite element analyses were performed to investigate the influences of mechanical conditions and material properties upon geometric behaviors of paper web. The web passing over rollers was modeled as a quadrilateral elastic membrane composed of the three dimensional shell elements. Three approaches were taken. In the first approach, the computations with geometrical nonlinearity generated some characteristic wrinkling patterns under the edge displacement conditions. In the second approach, effects of each material property on shear wrinkle formation by web stretching and lateral shear were evaluated with orthotropic elasticity. In the third approach, more practical boundary conditions were considered with the three dimensional contact analysis between the web and roller. Shear wrinkles due to roller misalignment were simulated in the web wrapping a roller.
