Floor tube overheating in Chemical Recovery Units (CRUs) is a significant concern due to the danger of smelt water reactions. The highly corrosive nature of molten smelt and the environmental concerns and restrictions with chromium based refractories have resulted in disappointing service life for many refractories. This paper will present the development and field experience of Alstom’s smelt resistant refractory floor tiles - SmeltGuardTM.
