Investigation of Deep-Wall Blistering in High-Quality FRP Piping at a Bleach Plant, 2004 11th International Symposium on Corrosion in the Pulp and Paper Industry
Unexpected, extensive deep-wall blistering occurred in many of the FRP lines at a bleach plant after only three
years of service. The blisters developed close to the structural laminate. Questions arose concerning the cause of the
damage and the service reliability of the piping. To answer these questions damaged samples, the blister liquid,
service conditions, etc have been studied. The results show that laminate in the piping was of good quality and that
the blistering was osmosis-related, but it seemed also to be strongly dependent on the temperature gradient across
the wall and on the laminate built-up.
