Traditionally, the management of environmental issues for product/markets within the industrial sector has been seen as a non-value added, or compliance activity. However, a broader, more holistic approach to difficult and complex environmental issues on a proactive basis can often lead to significant value-added opportunities for many companies. The advent of a number of tools, such as Life Cycle Assessment, has assisted in the pursuit of additional opportunities to increase value. This paper will provide an overview of a number of approaches used by the Dow Chemical Company to assess and quantify opportunities and vulnerabilities driven by environmental trends.
