This paper addresses some of the issues surrounding allocation and recycling decisions in life cycle inventory (LCI) by examining the results of a case study of corrugated boxes. The definitions of open-loop, closed-loop, and cascade recycling and the appropriateness of using these methods to produce LCI results are discussed. Also, physical and economic parameters on which coproduct allocation decisions might be based are explored.
