In the processing of any fibrous raw material used in the production of paper and board, a wide variety of dissolved and dispersed substances are released into the processwater. This paper discusses the possibilities of removing a majority of these substances in an economically effective way in order to produce water that can replace the use of fresh water without endangering production efficiency or product quality. The proposed solution consists of biological water-treatment in combination with countercurrent water-fiber flow and total removal of suspended solids.
