Papermills which produce corrugating medium from wastepaper-s are currently confronted to new regulations on COD discharges and water consumption. Complete closure of whitewater circuits leads to a reduction of effectiveness of cationic additives and a deterioration of properties of the produced paper. This paper presents results of a pilot study installed at a paper mill which have demonstrated that an anaerobic bed reactor inserted in a closed watercircuit can deconcentrate the organic pollution. Based on these results, the design of an industrial scale was determinated at the Lecoursonnois paper mill, and the installation started at the beginning of this year. Because of increased salt concentration in the loop, the complete closure was not yet realized. Solutions are currently examined and salt deconcentration system will be implemented in the next few months.
