Impact of Water System Closure on HAP and VOC Emmissions from Process Vents, 1996 Minimum Effluent Mills Symposium Proceedings

Tests conducted at a number of mills to characterize the emissions of volatile organic HAPS and VOCs from chemical pulp mill sources show that methanol constituted the major fraction of HAP emissions from most sources. Methanol emissions from the major sources of HAPS, which included vacuum drum brownstock washers, oxygen delignitication systems, smelt dissolving tanks, bleach plants and paper machines, correlate strongly with process stream methanol concentrations. The results suggest that process modifications implemented to minimize effluent flows have the potential for increasing HAP and VOC emissions from process vents and should be considered in mill closure studies.
