Pitch Control in Pulp Mills, 1997 Minimum Effluent Mills Symposium Proceedings

The technology of pitch control in kraft, sulfite, and mechanical pulp mills is reviewed. It is not uncommon for a 1,000 t/d chemical pulp mill to spend or lose over two million dollars per year on problems associated with deposits. This article reviews the kinds of pitch problems which can occur in pulp mills and the important factors for controlling them. These include: seasoning of wood, bark removal, pulping, foam control, washing, screening and cleaning, bleaching practices, and pulp machine operation. Quantitative guidelines for acceptable operating ranges for the parameters associated with many of these factors are presented. The article includes guidelines for the use of additives. It was written for use both as an educational tool and as a reference guide for problem solving in mills.
