Impact of Pulp Mill Contaminants on the Wet End Chemistry of a Fine Paper Machine, 1997 Minimum Effluent Mills Symposium Proceedings

Papermakers know that any variation of stock parameters will affect the efficiency of their paper machines. Some wet-end chemistry conditions influence machine runnability more than others. This paper describes the experimental and actual impacts of variable pulp conductivity on the wet-end chemistry of an integrated fine paper machine and suggests ways to minimize these instabilities. Our laboratory experimentation focused on common retention aid systems and how stock conductivity affects their performance. The mill data shows the variation of essential functional chemicals used to maintain certain paper properties and how conductivity influences their use.
