Membrane Filtration in the Closed-Cycle Bleach Plant, 1997 Minimum Effluent Mills Symposium Proceedings

In order to reduce the environmental impact Stora Nymölla has installed an ultrafiltration plant for treating oxygen stage effluents. Process limitations made unconventional solutions necessary. The ultrafiltration plant removes SO% of COD into a small concentrate stream. The concentrate is burnt in the bark boiler. Ultrafiltration removes non biodegradable substances. Good efficiency of the combination ultrafiltration and activated sludge has been reached. Membrane filtration is a useful unit process in the pulp and paper industry. Pilot trials with membrane treatment of streams from the peroxide and chelate stages have been performed.
