Impact of Falling Film, Cross-Flow Green Liquor Filtration and Modified Kraft Cooking on Mill Closure at Louisiana Pacific, Samoa Mill, 1997 Minimum Effluent Mills Symposium Proceedings

This paper describes the start-up and operation of the new falling film, cross-flow green liquor filter at the LP Samoa Mill. NPE’s have steadily decreased since the new filter start-up. High preexisting iron levels in the mill lime cycle apparently caused filter cloth plugging after start-up. However, the filter’s ability to purge iron has largely eliminated this problem. Light amber, clear “green” liquor plus white, dry (83% solids) lime mud are now produced at full capacity. Modified kraft cooking is now used full time at Samoa resulting in improved plug movement in the digester plus stronger pulp with lower COD and lower metals carryover.
