Moving to Double Coating at Australian Papers Tasmanian Operations, 1998 Metered Size Press Forum II Proceedings

The Australian Papers Tasmanian operation manufactures base paper at the Burnie Mill and subsequent off achine coating at the Wesley Vale Mill located some 60 km away. A strategic plan was developed to improve the quality of the coated sheet by alkaline sizing of the base sheet with subsequent double coating in order to increase demand. The geographical uniqueness of the operation has lead to a technically unique solution to install a roll metering size press to the off machine blade coater. This paper describes the market environment, identification of the opportunity, pilot trial work and describes the particular design issues and their solution in bringing this project to fruition.
