Future for Metered Size Press Applications, 1998 Metered Size Press Forum II Proceedings

The metered size press has become an important tool for manufacturing coated free sheet and groundwood printing papers. Rebuilds to convert from making standard surface sized papers production of on-machine coated printing papers and technical papers have saved many old non-profitable machines from permanent shutdown. During the past five years, the metered size press has gone through a major development from being a unit for surface sizing and pigmentation into a high quality coater. Today, high coat weights can be applied at high machine speeds without difficulties. Many new developments of metering and applicator systems for conventional inverted blade coaters have been adapted to the metered size press to improve quality and runnability. The unit is used for on and off machine applications both for single and double sided coating .

Future metered size press units will be compact modular units easy to install with production speeds up to 2000 m/min. One of the most important future applications for the metered size press will be as a precoater for production of multiple coated grades and as a coater for production of coated publication papers. The metered size press will be installed both on new machines and as a mojor component of rebuild of old narrow slow machines.
