Stratification of Tissue Grades, 1998 Multi-Ply Forming Forum Proceedings

Headbox operation has become much more demanding in recent years, with requirements for higher speeds, higher design flows, better CD and MD profiles, lower quality furnishes, and higher sheet quality requirements, all making machine design and floor operation much more challenging. Use of the stratification concept for production of a layered tissue sheet has been proven for many tissue and towel products. Use of layering today has become more important to meet the stringent demands of a highly competitive marketplace which demands better quality tissue while using lower quality furnishes. Figures 1 and 2 illustrate two common reasons for stratification of tissue sheets. The first figure illustrates why many of the premium consumer manufacturers of tissue started to layer their sheets.
