High Consistency Forming of Multi-Ply Board, 1998 Multi-Ply Forming Forum Proceedings

High consistency forming has so far been commercially employed in the manufacture of three-ply board, where the middle ply is formed at high consistency and the outer plies are formed at low consistency. This combination has been shown to produce optimum stiffness, tensile and bond strengths at a significant saving in fibre. Analysis of one commercial operation which had undergone a re-build, suggests that aside from the known effects of drainage sequence and fines migration at couching, ply bond strength may also be effected by differential motion between forming fabrics which exists in certain twin wire geometries. The paper reviews the development of SymFlo HC high consistency headbox and its application on two types of multi-ply liquid packaging board formers.
