This paper will review four nonwood fibers, flax, hemp, sisal and abaca examining the effect of these materials in papermaking. The type of fiber is found to influence pulp properties and grades of materials within in each species may further impact the results. Flax and hemp exhibit very similar results, the pulp properties being affected by the core content (shive or hurd, respectively) in the raw material. Grades of sisal and abaca show that the varieties of these plants together with the method employed for the extraction of the fibers can directly intluence the final properties of the pulp. Otherwise, variations result lower than expected as strands of sisal and abaca dissolves into de individual fiber cells during the cooking processes.
