Handling and Processing of Oregon Ryegrass Straw for Pulping, 1998 North America Nonwood Fiber Symposium Proceedings

The opportunity to improve the quality of straw fiber before delivery to a pulp mill is significant through field practices prior to baling and post-storage processing. During this study of Oregon ryegrass utilization, a number of field variables, such as raking practices and moisture content, were tested for impact upon straw cleanliness and quality. A multi-stage pilot straw processing operation was constructed and operated to size, screen and clean baled straw to meet pulp mill specifications. The pilot plant can process 50 tons per day of straw into clean straw “chips” and by-product fine “meal.”
