Kenaf Industries Ltd. in Texas & Elsewhere, 1998 North America Nonwood Fiber Symposium Proceedings

Kenaf Industries Ltd. was formed to develop and promote the commercial usage of kenaf, an annual fiber crop currently being introduced in the USA. The plant is an hibiscus species considered indigenous to West Africa and is part of the Mallow family, which includes cotton and okra. Like its botanical “cousins”, kenaf thrives in areas that have long warm growing seasons and attains a stalk height of about 14 feet by harvest. Kenaf has been promoted as an economic and environmental fiber for the pulp and paper industry since the1950s by the USDA. Today’s developments are the results from several decades of research and development by public and private sector entities.
