My TAPPI Story: McKenna Goulette
Two consumer-waste recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) polymers, one industrial-waste copolyester, and a virgin PET polyester were melt blown using a 2.5 inch (6.35 cm) melt blown die which was specially designed with high pressure tolerance for processing high performance polymers and recycled plastics. Although some extruder feeding problems were encountered with the flake form of the recycled polymers, the recycled plastics produced extremely fine fibers and melt blown webs with tenacity values much higher than the virgin PET polymers. These preliminary findings have demonstrated that recycled PET and copolyester polymers can be processed into melt blown nonwoven webs.
