My TAPPI Story: Naomi Gehling
The thermal calendering process, when not efficiently controlled, produces unnecessary waste of heat energy. Simultaneously, the best properties of the nonwoven product may not be realized. Both situations can be effectively remedied through quantitative insight into the interaction of the thermally related parameters of the matrix and binding fibrous materials, the roll temperatures, and the feed speeds. An understanding of effective heat distribution can be gained by analyzing the transient modes of heat transfer through analysis of the heat diffusion equation, with the incorporation of convective and radiative transfer into the process. The significance of components of such an analysis is illustrated for blends of cotton and polyester staple fiber.
