Multi-Layered Sheet - the Future Media for Automotive Filtration Applications?, 1991 Nonwovens Conference Proceedings
Multi-layered media has been around in the paper industry for many years. The advantages have been both economical and qualitative. Utilizing less expensive pulp in the center layer can be used for getting cost reductions. This approach has been used mainly in the linerboard and some printing paper types of grades. The paper quality on the other hand can be modified by optimizing the surface characteristics or building up a permeability gradient through the sheet.
In this paper the multi-layer concept is discussed, and evaluated as to how it could be applied for automotive filtration purposes. Results from wet laid laboratory scale trials are presented for verifying both some of the benefits and limitations of the multi-layered media compared to the "conventional" automotive filter paper. Special attention is given to the ways of improving the actual filtration performance.
