Vermiculite Dispersions and Their Benefits as High Temperature Coatings and Binders, 1991 Nonwovens Conference Proceedings

Proprietary dispersions made from chemically delaminated vermiculite have found commercial use as inorganic coatings/binders for woven textiles. Service temperatures for treated articles have been increased to over 1100°C. Vermiculite dispersions are believed to offer similar benefits in other applications including industrial mats, gaskets, roofing sheets and other areas.

In this paper, we also describe how a 15 mil (0.381 mm), vermiculite dispersion coated, fiberglass mat underlayment was able to meet the performance criteria for the intermittent flame test portion of a class A UL fire rating for combustible roof decks. Uncoated mats as thick as 65 mils (1.651 mm), when run using a similar roofing configuration, have only achieved a class B certification.
