An optical device consisting of a light source, a reflector and a photocell was used to measure the basis weight variation of a number of light weight, bonded fiberwebs. Static calibration of the instrument was performed on spunbonded webs and thermal bonded carded webs. The dynamic response of the instrument was evaluated by comparing the uniformity of the webs, as measured by the instrument, when the web speed was varied between 22.9 and 365.8 meters per minute. The uniformity as measured dynamically was also compared to the uniformity determined by cutting and weighing small specimens from the fiber-webs.
