Formation, or overall uniformity, is one of the most important quality parameters in the production of wet-laid nonwovens. Nevertheless, formation is still usually evaluated subjectively. A quantitative evaluation of forma- tion could offer significant advantages for both research and quality control purposes.
An investigation was conducted to evaluate the use of a commercial formation analyzer on wet-laid nonwoven webs. The effect of chemical dispersants and viscosity modifiers on formation was explored using the instrument. Possible limitations of automated image analysis for nonwoven webs were also explored.
