Alternative Polymers for Melt Blowing, 1993 Nonwovens Conference Proceedings
Robert L. Shambaugh, John J. May
The bulk of melt blown fibers are presently made from polypropylene. For some years now, polypropylene has been tailored to the melt blowing process. By tailoring we mean that special polymer grades have been produced to enhance the processibility of the polymer in the melt blowing process. Other polymers, such as polyethylene and polystyrene, also have great potential for tailoring to the melt blowing process.
Polyethylene, polystyrene, and polymethylpentene were melt blown in a series of experiments. The processibilities of these materials were compared to the processibility of a polypropylene presently used in commercial melt blowing.
