Physical properties of needle-punched nonwovens may be engineered by changing fiber type, fiber size, staple length, punch density, area1 density and thickness. Three needle felt structures were prepared with ultra high strength polyethylene staple by varying the amount of fiber needling. As expected, the tensile and tear properties increased with increasing punch density. The air permeability and ballistic performance were higher, however, at lower punch densities. Additional work is required to determine the effect fiber denier and staple length have on creating optimum performance characteristics.
