Adsorption of an Organic Vapor in an Activated Carbon Loaded Melt Blown Laminate, 1993 Nonwovens Conference Proceedings

Wayne T. Davis, Christopher C. Hood, Maureen Dever

Thin bed absorption media are being investigated for use in a variety of applications including protective clothing for military use and hazardous waste cleanup, indoor air quality, and as a layer in a variety of filtration media. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the dynamics of thin bed absorption of an organic vapor on an activated carbon loaded melt blown laminate. Absorption capacity was found to increase linearly as the activated carbon loading was increased and found to exhibit an adsorption isotherm that was similar to that obtained in thick bed systems. In contrast to thick bed systems, the working adsorption capacity of the thin bed system as measured by the breakthrough capacity was less than 50% of the total adsorption capacity.
